Commissioning of Damage Control Simulator - AKSHAT

One of the proud achievements of ELECTROPNEUMATICS is the turnkey undertaking of the Damage Control Simulator (DCS)- Akshat for the Indian Navy. It was commissioned at INS Shivaji, Lonavala, India on December 18, 2001 by Vice Admiral A. S. Krishnan, Chief of Material, Indian Navy.

The DCS is essentially a training system that simulates a realistic and stressful but controlled environment for crew training in ship damage control and repair in various damage scenarios. In real-life operational service, the possibility of ship damage in both war and peace times is likely. To contain the damage and save the vessel, the crew needs to be able to respond to the threat with efficiency, expertise and confidence gained from training in similar situations. The realistic damage scenarios and crises generated in the DCS contributes invaluably in driving away fear among the trainees and in improving team building traits, thereby preparing them for unforeseen hardships and emergencies at sea.

This project, the first of its kind in India, was executed by the joint working of several sub-contractors, of which ELECTROPNEUMATICS was the turnkey contractor.

ELECTROPNEUMATICS' scope of supply included:
  • Conceptual designing.
  • Detailed design and engineering, including civil construction, mechanical construction, electrical/electronics and hydraulics.
  • Selection and incorporation of specialised equipment for training in real-lief scenario and monitoring such training through closed circuit TV and other communication gadgets.
  • Building/Manufacture as per Navy standards under Inspection of Indian Register of Shipping and Indian Navy.
  • Trials and testing.

The salient features of the DCS - Akshat are:
  • Three decks with 19 compartments and five exercise areas. Overall dimensions are 14.6 x 6.7 x 7.87 m and weight is 75 tonnes.
  • Exercise environment- 75 tonnes of water flooding capacity,15 degree roll, 20 degree list, 1.6 m flooding level, total darkness, smoke generation and battle sounds.
  • Manning- 6 instructors, 3 junior sailors and 24 trainees. Personnel are trained in different simulated conditions of damages such as severe flooding and power breakdowns. Additional features include usage of emergency systems, smoke drills, casuality evacuation drills, etc.
  • Safety features- entire exercise monitoring by CCTV, crash stop operation, water drain within 90 secs, exhaust of smoke, etc.
  • Support systems- 22 KV sub-station, 500 KW diesel generator, 600/100 TPH pumps, HP air compressors, 15 tons air conditioning system, water filtration plant, trainee related infrastructure such as briefing areas change rooms, bathrooms, etc.

The DCS Akshat is a unique facility, which has been completed in a record span of just 21 months through complete indigenous technology.
